Celebrate the Restoration of Ka Lanakila Church at Keomoku & the Lanai Debut of "Voices of Lanai" Film, June 23, 2012


       Save the date! June 23, 2012. Both programs are a free community event. Current and former Lanai residents and visitors may want to mark their calendars to plan a trip to Lanai to visit in June. The Lanai Culture & Heritage Center will host a celebration of the completion of the restoration of Ka Lanakila Church at Keomoku on Saturday, June 23.

      Kupuna who attended the church as children will open the event which will begin at 11 a.m. After a pule ohana and himeni, everyone is invited to take part in a potluck luncheon and to join in the musical entertainment. Guided walks to the Maunalei Sugar Mill and other adjacent sites will also be offered along with a trip to Kahalepalaoa for a visit to the 1837 stone and mortar church/school house and locomotive.

      At 4 p.m., the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center along with The High Maka Maka Film Society will host a viewing of the 1987’s documentary, Reflections of Lanai to be followed at 6 p.m. by the Lanai premiere of the Voices of Lanaia mini-documentary film prepared by Kenneth Martinez Burgmaier from Jazz Alley TV. “It is important for us to air the programs on Lanai to honor the elders of all cultural backgrounds who shared their stories with us before we share them with a broader audience," Executive Director, Kepa Maly shares.

    Both screenings will be held at the historic Lanai Theatre Playhouse.
