Fellows
Fifteen emerging leaders were chosen through a rigorous
application and selection process from a pool of nearly 100 applicants.
Participants represent organizations from a wide range of sectors including
government, nonprofit and business with representation from the islands of
Oahu, Maui and Kauai.
Historic Hawai‘i Foundation congratulates Lance Parker,

Lance Parker is a senior vice president, acquisitions &
dispositions and the principal broker for A&B Properties, Inc. He is
responsible for the acquisition and disposition of all commercial real estate
assets in Hawaii and continental United States, and has direct management of
all licensed real estate activities for A&B. Prior to A&B, he provided
commercial real estate advisory and brokerage services on a national basis at
Grubb & Ellis. Lance has a bachelor’s degree in finance with a major option
in real property management and development from the University of Southern
California and currently serves on the board of Historic Hawaii Foundation.
Key Program Elements
Omidyar
Fellows begin the leadership program in early-October and will use The Leadership Challenge by James Kozes and
Barry Posner as the primary resource throughout the program. The Fellows learn
from presenters and each other around a variety of topics that form the basis
of the program’s curriculum. Each Fellow is assigned an executive coach as
coaching provides a framework and guidance on all elements of the program as
well as the Fellow’s overall successes and challenges. Coaches and staff also
help to design Individual Learning Excursions meant to push the boundaries of
the Fellow’s comfort zone and engage in deep learning in an unfamiliar
environment. Fellows then return and put what they’ve learned into action
through a collaborative solutions process.
Cohort-Based Learning
The context for transformative learning is community. The ability of a group of emerging leaders to form a learning community is vital to the experience of leadership development.
Executive Coaching
Individual coaching is the single element of greatest impact for leadership development. Typically occurring during 60-90 minute one-on-one meetings or phone calls every two to three weeks, sessions are confidential, goal-oriented, and customized to each Fellow’s leadership demands.
Curriculum
The curriculum designed for the Omidyar Fellows incorporates a range of disciplines for a range of learning styles in a manner that is experiential and outcomes-driven. The unique cross-cultural competencies required of those leading in Hawaii are integrated throughout.
Individual Learning Excursion
An individually tailored off-island experience helps to meet the unique learning goals and professional development plan for each Omidyar Fellow. There are also opportunities for shared learning, as Fellows debrief the experience with the group.
Conversations with Leaders
Informal conversations outside the monthly sessions with military, civic, business, community, and government leaders give Omidyar Fellows an opportunity to reflect on the challenges of leadership in Hawaii.
Collaborative Practice Project
In small groups of three to five members, Omidyar Fellows identify and address a critical issue of interest to them and create an action paper with recommendations. Each group is assigned a project advisor and shares the results of its work with the entire class.
